Anil Ambani led Reliance Communications can launch 4G services on its network as early as the second half of this fiscal, according to Gurdeep Singh, chief executive of consumer business at India’s fourth-biggest mobile phone operator. In an interview with ET, days after bidding ended for India’s costliest spectrum auction, Singh said no other operator would be able to get requisite spectrum to launch 4G services in the 800MHz band. Edited excerpts:
What was your approach going into the auction?
We entered the auction with a focus on the next 20 years in telephony and not unduly biased or driven by the past. We believe the future is 4G and not 2G and 3G. Naturally, our first priority was to future-proof our spectrum holding; we already had 5 MHz in the 800 band in 11 circles, and added an additional carrier where we required to beef up. Now, except in Rajasthan, where spectrum was not on sale, we have 5 MHz spectrum across the country to do FDD LTE networks. Full interview at ET Telecom
