Telcos Face Financial Pressure as DoT Plans to Split 2G & 3-4G Sale

The telecom department plans to sell 3G and 4G airwaves by May 2015, possibly netting the government upwards of Rs 60,000 crore in a fiercely contested auction and satisfying the demands of top telcos such as Bharti Airtel and Vodafone India for more spectrum to support data growth.

But these timelines will disappoint the industry, which wanted these frequencies to be sold in a simultaneous auction that included 2G airwaves as well, as had been proposed by the sector regulator. 2G airwaves in both CDMA and GSM bands are likely to be sold starting February 23 while the rest could be sold a few months later, as per a telecom ministry presentation.
