Spectrum Winners Raise Alarm On Payment Letter Flaws

Comments Off on Spectrum Winners Raise Alarm On Payment Letter Flaws 7

Most winners in India’s biggest spectrum sale have claimed there were discrepancies in the provisional allotment letters sent out by the telecom department and wanted the errors fixed before making upfront payments, according to executives at two telecom carriers. The inconsistencies were acknowledged by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), which said it was “well seized of the matter.”

The typo errors have been rectified and the partial spectrum calculations have been reconciled with active interaction with the concerned operators,” it said in an official e-mailed response to ET’s queries. The DoT said the errors may also have been caused by “differences in partial spectrum calculations, which are done using population figures of Census 2011.” The government had expected funds from the auction to rein in the fiscal deficit. Last week, telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had urged the spectrum winners to fork out some 29,000 crore as initial payment by the end of March. Some telcos had made partial upfront payments of about 11,000 crore as of Tuesday evening. Original post at ET Telecom
