Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani’s flagship telecom venture, Reliance Jio Infocomm, has been allotted crucial signalling point (SP) codes by the telecom department for launching national long distance (NLD) and international long distance (ILD) services.

The development takes Reliance Jio a step closer to the launch of its telecom services in the country.

Signalling function enables interchange of information over long distance telecom networks. SP codes are nodes that facilitate actual routing of information between two points. They also enable NLD networks to connect with local networks and ILD operators to inter-connect with other overseas networks.

Reliance Jio “needs to use the SP codes within six months, failing which, they will be withdrawn by the government for re-allocation,” said an internal DoT note, reviewed by ET. SP codes have been allocated to Jio in Mumbai, Delhi, Karnataka and Kolkata for both ILD and NLD operations, the note showed. Original post at ET Telecom
