Net Neutrality: IAMAI Counters Arguments By Telcos, COAI, Aupsi On Call Revenues

The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) has disputed arguments of the country’s top three telcos and industry associations on the financial loss they face due to cannibalisation from over-the-top (OTT) players, saying that their “mere bald statements” were not supported by facts or financial data and were more in the form of “rent seeking” to influence regulation.
The industry body that represents interests of internet-based companies said voice over internet protocol (VOIP) calls cannot be brought under the ‘same service same rules’ umbrella as they were fundamentally different from traditional telephony. A VOIP call costs three times more than a traditional voice call, and chat apps, which also allow transfer of music, videos and messages, were contributing to faster data usage, underlining its argument that OTT players were not impacting telco revenues.
