FiberLight issued an update on its giant fiber buildout in West Texas this morning. By the end of 2014 they’ll have built out 1,765 route miles and hooked up 800 cell towers on-net in the state. By early next year, they’ll have their DWDM and transport network online to Abilene, Amarillo, Lubbock, Midland, and Odessa. Lots left to do though, another 1,100 route miles will be built in 2015 and 900 more beyond that in 2016.
In the Pacific Northwest, Fatbeam picked up a key long-term dark fiber lease to Noel Communications. Noel is using the 60 miles of fiber to expand its footprint in Yakima. Both Noel and Fatbeam have been expanding rapidly throughout Washington and the neighboring regions in recent years.
In Chicago, Ciena and MREN have upgraded the StarWave research and education exchange facility with Ciena’s packet-optical gear. The 100G upgrade will enable huge the data flows generated by the likes of high energy particle physics experieents and genetic research. They’re also putting SDN to work to push a few boundaries.
