India’s 2G spectrum auction concluded after 68 rounds of bidding on Thursday with Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance Jio emerge as major winners.
During the auction that lasted for 10 days (3-4 February, 2014) the government collected a cumulative bids amount of Rs 61,162 Crore. The amount fetched during this auction is much higher than the estimated amount of Rs. 41,000 Crore.
Eight companies, including Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance Jio, Idea and Aircel participated in the auction of 900MHz (block of 45 Mhz) and 1800 MHz (block of 385MHz) band airwaves. The 900 MHz band was auctioned only in three metros namely Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata, whereas the 1800Mhz was offered in 22 circles.
In the 900MHz band, three telecom operators- Airtel, Vodafone and Idea won the Delhi circle, while Airtel and Vodafone also won the other two metro circles, according to the provisional data posted by Department of Telecom (DoT).
Out of the 22 circles which were on offer in the 1800 MHz band, Airtel won in 15 circles, Reliance Jio bagged in 14 circles. Among other major winning telecom operators include Vodafone (11 circles), Idea (10 circles) and Aircel (5 circles).
The licenses won by telecom operators today will be valid for a period of 20 years.
