India starts its third round of 2G spectrum bid today with eight telecom companies including Vodafone, Airtel, Idea Cellular and Reliance Jio Infocomm in the fray.
The auction would be conducted in two phases- one for nationwide use of the 1800 MHz frequency and another to offer cellular-phone services using the 900 MHz frequency in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata.
It has been taking place since the Supreme Court of India quashed 122 licenses and allocation of spectrum granted on or after 10.1.2008 (vide its Order dated 2nd February, 2012 in WP(Civil) No.423 of 2010). It also ordered grant of license and allocation of spectrum in 2G band in 22 Service Areas by auction.
As per rules of the auction, every bidder has been given a quota of 240 minutes to extend bid round.
Except for Vodafone and Reliance communication other participants namely Bharti Airtel Limited, Aircel Limited, Idea Cellular Limited, Tata Teleservices Limited, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd and Telewings Communications Services Ltd are eligible to bid in all service areas.
