Bharti Airtel has launched a plan which allows users to browse some mobile applications for free, prompting critics to warn that the latest offering from India’s largest telecom operator, like similar offers from other operators, falls foul of the concept of net neutrality.

In a statement issued on Monday, Bharti said its Airtel Zero will be a platform where companies, including startups, can offer apps for free. In effect, the app maker will pay for the customer’s free usage to the operator. The platform, according to some industry executives and experts, violates net neutrality as it offers access to some apps and not equally to all apps. A spokesperson for Internet & Mobile Association of India said all apps should be made accessible to users on a non-discriminatory basis, not just a few. Original post at ET Telecom
