Cellular Operators Association of India Thursday supported the appeal of the academicians to set up Telecom Research and Development Fund (TRDF) and Telecom Entrepreneurship Development Fund (TEDF) to encourage research and entrepreneurship in the Indian Telecom industry.

“COAI is committed to support any such Govt initiatives in building the ecosystem as is done in the past for establishing TCOEs, TSDSI and TSSC,” Rajan S Mathews, Director General, COAI, said in a statement. COAI is the industry lobby body representing GSM operators such as Bharti AirtelBSE 3.26 %, Vodafone, and Idea CellularBSE.

The Professors from IITs, IIM, and IISc recently urged the telecom department (DoT) to use a portion of the spectrum auction proceeds to activate the multiple central funds created a year ago to finance a local telecom product development and manufacturing ecosystem and intellectual property rights (IPRs) creation.

“It is essential that proper proactive support be provided from the Government as well as industry for a joint effort towards facilitating this much required ecosystem,” Mathew added. Original post at The Economic Times
