India’s biggest phone company Bharti Airtel is said to be in preliminary discussions with Tata Teleservices on joining forces in a front that would be better equipped to counter possible closer integration between the telecom businesses of brothers Mukesh and Anil Ambani, according to people with knowledge of the matter.
The pairings on both sides have synergies in various areas. Bharti and Tata Teleservices, for instance, together have 3G licences in 19 out of 22 circles. There’s little overlap in optic fibre capacity and appropriate sharing technologies will make possible a suitable network for connected devices that won’t congest voice.
These early discussions don’t preclude the possibilities of a strategic investor being inducted into Tata Teleservices or even an outright sale. Original post at ET Telecom
