The number of mobile phone subscribers, who have successfully ported their number using Mobile Number Portability facility in India has crossed 100 million mark, according to a release by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
Mobile Number Portability (MNP) was introduced across the country on 20th January 2011. MNP is a facility for the mobile telephone users of the county which allows a subscriber to retain his mobile telephone number when he moves from one Access Provider t another Access Provider in the same service area irrespective of the mobile technology.
In 2011, the porting requests rejection rate was around 40% which has been brought down to around 11% now, TRAI said.
It also said that financial disincentives to the tune of about Rs 8 Crore have also been levied on various service providers, who violate the MNP regulations on account of wrongful rejection of porting request or delay in activation/deactivation of the mobile numbers sought to be ported.
